The stadium was almost completely rebuilt prior to the 1955 baseball season when the Kansas City Athletics moved to Kansas City from Philadelphia. The A's played from 1955 to 1967, the Kansas City Royals from 1969 to 1972, the Kansas City Chiefs from 1963 to 1971 and the Kansas City Spurs from 1968–1969. The Outfield Experience provides the fans with entertainment for all ages. In addition, the views of the field are spectacular and give fans several photographic locations to watch a game. Unveiled in 2012 was the largest in-stadium solar array in MLB as part of an energy partnership with Evergy. The 120 panels on the Outfield Experience canopy provide approximately 36,000 kWh of renewable energy each year.
Municipal Stadium
Located in the inner-city neighborhood near 18th and Vine, the stadium first housed the minor-league white Kansas City Blues baseball team and the Negro league Kansas City Monarchs. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, founded in 1990, is a few blocks from the site. Kauffman Stadium's unique features include a 322-foot wide water spectacular. The water spectacular opened as the largest privately funded fountain in the world. In keeping with the architecture of the stadium, the existing water spectacular featuring cascading water now extends near the left field corner. To reach Surprise Stadium on game days, make a right on Bullard Avenue and follow the signs to park in one of the lots outside of the center field entrance.
In his letter, Sherman said renovating the current stadium up to standards needed to compete with other organizations would cost as much as or more than the new stadium. Temporary stands were erected in left field to expand the stadium's capacity each fall, but had to be removed during the baseball season. A year ago, we announced that we were undertaking a diligent, deliberate, and transparent process to explore the possibility of a new ballpark district. We said we would look at various locations across the city that will allow for residential, commercial, and community components.
Hopefully, Sherman and his team will regroup before the next event and realize their fanbase needs some answers. Please know that any final decisions will be made with broad community input, and in the best interests of our fans, the Royals’ long-term future, and our Greater Kansas City community. Second, as we look to the future, I want to share with you our perspective on Kauffman Stadium, our treasured home for the last half century.
Royals expected to bring back star pitcher for another season
Behind the Hall of Fame, fans will find the kids area complete with the Price Chopper Little K with a field turf surface. The second potential site would be about a mile southeast of East Village. It would be on the corner of 18th and Vine and is currently home to the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority. This would put a new stadium less than two blocks away from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the fields for Kansas City’s MLB Urban and Youth Academy. The first potential site would be in the “East Village” district of Kansas City. This is currently about a block east of City Hall and close to the K.C.

"Economists have studied the economic effects of stadiums extensively finding little to no impacts on host economies," Bradbury said. "There is universal agreement among economists that stadiums are not economic development catalysts. It's why stadium subsidy supporters have to pay consultants to concoct these bogus numbers." Sherman also said in the letter that the team wouldn't ask Jackson County citizens to contribute any more tax dollars than they already do and that team officials want "input and engagement, as a community" on the potential stadium project. Sherman said that the team will be looking for a new stadium to replace Kauffman Stadium when the team’s lease expires in 2031 for the proposed stadium complex. In a release Wednesday, officials recommended that fans bundle up with loose-fitting layers, and cover up all exposed skin.
Many, including myself, forget how Kansas City became a baseball town again during those years. My own parents, who had never attended a Royals game, nearly attended a 2014 World Series game, three-hour drive and all. The ripple effect that successful baseball has locally is still mind-boggling.
Renderings for the new sports and entertainment district imply a mixed-use complex with connections to local surroundings. Jones was behind his Dallas Cowboys’ The Star District, which is considered the league’s gold standard. The property has a 12,000-seat practice facility also used by high school teams and 19 restaurants, a hotel, a cigar bar, a spa and multiple shops. "I think there's a lot of information that's left to be determined," Future State Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden said. Supporters of the idea said this is all good news for downtown Kansas City, which expects free public transit to help alleviate any parking concerns.
Opened in 2002, Surprise Stadium hosts several Cactus League games each spring. We look forward to seeking input from the public over the coming months about our vision to best serve our residents and build on the momentum our city is experiencing. To accomplish this move, our plans will be contingent on continuing our public-private partnership and investment with multiple local jurisdictions and the State of Missouri. Sherman said the Royals will hold a listening tour over the next several months and begin a discussion with local, state and federal officials on funding.
We are excited to now share that we have several leading locations under close consideration, both in downtown Kansas City and close to it. As you may already know, it’s become challenging to maintain The K. When its current lease with Jackson County concludes at the end of this decade, it will be 60 years old. The renovations required at The K to achieve our objectives would cost as much or more than the price tag to develop a new ballpark. A new home would be a far better investment, both for local taxpayer dollars already supporting our facility, and for the Kansas City community.
Major League Baseball responded by hastily granting expansion franchises to four cities, including a Kansas City team owned by local pharmaceutical magnate Ewing Kauffman. However, Symington forced MLB to move up the start date to 1969 as he was unwilling to have Kansas City wait three years to have baseball again. The other expansion team in the American League, the Seattle Pilots, were without a suitable stadium in 1969 and the accelerated schedule forced by Symington led to their bankruptcy after just one season. In 1970, they relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the Milwaukee Brewers. With lawsuits pending, Seattle returned to the majors with the Mariners in 1977.
We have enjoyed many exciting moments together at the Truman Sports Complex over the years. In the spirit of Ewing Kauffman, our current mission is to look ahead to ensure that Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Royals will thrive in this region for decades to come. The stadium was demolished in 1976, and replaced by a municipal garden. Today, the former ballpark site is being redeveloped with new single family homes.
